Almodovar Del Rio
Is set at the foot of an amazing castle making it one of the prettiest towns in the area especially at night when the castle is lit from underneath giving the illusion of a floating castle.
The town it self has lots of bars & restaurants and offers great value for money.
It is a very typical Spanish town where they speak little English so a phrase book is recommended! Although the local people are friendly and always willing to assist.
The castle itself is a must see while here and is renowned as one of the best-preserved castles in Spain and open to the public. Low admission charge. The castle of Almodóvar del Rio, in Cordoba province was built by the Moors in 740 on the top of a 333-foot (100.6 m) rocky hill. Captured by Ferdinand III of Castilla (r. 1217-1252) in the thirteenth century after a four-year siege, the castle later fell into ruins and was restored at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Cordoba
Cordoba is a compendium of history and modernity. This ancient city, which has been declared World Heritage Site, is a living legacy of the diverse cultures that settled in it throughout history.
To take a stroll through the historic quarter of Cordoba is to discover a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mosque-Cathedral, which reflects the importance of the city during medieval times and which is a real symbol of the capital.
Without disregarding its splendid past, Cordoba is definitely a modern city that has been able to adapt to the present day, offering the most modern infrastructures and services, as well as a large network of hotels, bars & restaurants.
Cordoba is also synonymous with art, culture and leisure, thanks to a myriad of cultural events that are organized here throughout the year: Flamenco festivals, concerts, ballet and other activities that are complemented by a number of museums and an exciting nightlife.
Dominating the landscape in the city is the Great Mosque. Its fame spread after it was built, due to its ingenious construction and its wealth. The "forest of columns" (there are nearly a thousand of them), set on top of the Visigoth basilica, is one of the main attractions of this place. Nineteen naves make up the quadrangular plan of the early mosque, divided by a double series of arches, which combine Moorish arches and semicircular arches. In addition to alternating brick with stone, and red with white, other decorative elements were used, such as sculpted marble, stucco, mosaics, and plasterwork.
Cordoba's many tourist attractions include numerous cinemas, museums, restaurants, bars, pavement cafés, and so on. All this goes along with the Andalusian charm of the area around the Mosque-Cathedral, by day or by night.
As for the holiday celebrations, during Easter Week in Cordoba, about 60 pasos (religious floats and sculptures) parade through the city in a total of 32 processions joined by Nazarenes (members of lay brotherhoods, wearing long hooded robes), penitents, singers of saetas (religious flamenco songs), and the scent of incense and orange blossoms.
The month of May is a continuous celebration in the city. During the first days of the month, the squares and all other strategic points in the city are decorated with May crosses, made or adorned with flowers.
During the first fortnight of May, the courtyards are a must for anyone who wishes to enjoy the incomparable beauty of one of the most typical elements of Cordovan architecture. During these days the Courtyard Contest and Festival takes place, and, because of this, many houses in the historic quarter - whether they are ancestral homes with porches full of columns and fountains, or popular houses with whitewashed walls and wells - open their courtyards to show visitors corners filled with plant pots and flowers.
During the last week of the month, the May Fair (the fair of Nuestra Señora de la Salud) takes place. At this fair, many different clubs and associations from the city set up stands, where tapas are served, and people dance in the "tablaos" (hardwood floor for flamenco dancing). During these days, men and women, dressed in traditional costumes, ride their horses through the fairground. The bullfights, which take place in the Plaza de los Califas, are also worth a mention.
When it comes to shopping, Cordoba has a wide variety of products to offer to the visitor; namely foods, crafts, jewellery, silver items, traditional Cordovan filigree work, etc.
The most active shopping area is located to the north, from Gondomar and the Plaza de las Tendillas to the Ronda de los Tejares. The Jewish quarter and the area near the Mosque are also full of souvenir, photo and gift shops.
For those who wish to go shopping, there are big shopping centers off the Madrid motorway, off the motorway leading to the airport and beside Avenida del Brillante. Some of the most popular shopping centers in the city of Cordoba Zoco-Cordoba, and the Arcángel Shopping Center.
